  • an examination of the characteristics of something; "there are laboratories for commercial testing"; "it involved testing thousands of children for smallpox"

  • Give (someone) a short written or oral examination of their proficiency or knowledge

  • examination: the act of giving students or candidates a test (as by questions) to determine what they know or have learned

  • Take measures to check the quality, performance, or reliability of (something), esp. before putting it into widespread use or practice

  • Reveal the strengths or capabilities of (someone or something) by putting them under strain

MD 302 (2011-Jan-28): Unfused Tetanus

Channels:
* Top: length (1V = 1mm)
* Middle: force (1V = 1N)
* Bottom: 140 Hz stimulus at 1 ms pulse width

Electrical stimulus directly to the left tibialis anterior of a mouse produces an unfused tetanus.

The length is effectively unchanged which makes this an isometric contraction. If I read correctly, the length varied by about 10 micrometers. Passive tension is about 0.4 N (shown at cursor 3) and total tension is about 1.2 N (delta tension of 0.75 N).

Latency between stimulus and peak contraction was about 15 milliseconds.

Unfortunately, the pentobarbital caused the mouse (#435) to die during vivisection so this tetanus was taken from a dead mouse approximately 20 minutes after death. Subsequent stimulations produced less and less force likely due to ATP consumption.

Equipment:
* Aurora Scientific 805C muscle lever system
* Aurora Scientific 809B in situ mouse test apparatus
* Axon Instruments Digidata 1440A for data acquisition
* Newport VH3648 vibration isolation table with metric breadboard
* AxoScope software

The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Test Equipment for Testing Electrical, Radio, and Communication Circuits and Motors Excluding Portable Instrument Transformers

This econometric study covers the world outlook for test equipment for testing electrical, radio, and communication circuits and motors excluding portable instrument transformers across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for test equipment for testing electrical, radio, and communication circuits and motors excluding portable instrument transformers. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Sickle mowers, also called reciprocating mowers, bar mowers, or finger-bar mowers, have a long (typically six to seven and a half feet) bar on which is mounted fingers with stationary guardplates. In a channel on the bar there is a reciprocating sickle with very sharp sickle sections (triangular blades). The sickle bar is driven back and forth along the channel. The grass, or other plant matter, is cut between the sharp edges of the sickle sections and the finger-plates (this action can be likened to an electric hair clipper).
The bar rides on the ground, supported on a skid at the inner end, and it can be tilted to adjust the height of the cut. A springloaded board at the outer end of the bar guides the cut hay away from the uncut hay. The so-formed channel, between cut and uncut material, allows the mower skid to ride in the channel and cut only uncut grass cleanly on the next swath. These were the first successful horse-drawn mowers on farms and the general principles still guide the design of modern mowers.

Manufacturing Facilities Design & Material Handling (4th Edition)

Using a hands-on approach, the fourth edition of Manufacturing Facilities Design and Material Handling connects theoretical concepts of plant layout and design to real-life experiences students will face in the field. Following select chapters, “Project in the Making” is an ongoing case study that allows students to see how their knowledge is put to use in the design of an actual manufacturing facility. The revised fourth edition contains a new look at the increased importance of energy costs, transportation, and plant location on facilities planning today.

Ontario - HDR cog

Ontario - HDR cog

This isn't really a cog. And the cog isn't at all rusted! Its natural colour is dark iron brown.

This cog was hung on a nail inside the door of the cabin. On the floor of the cabin were old, abandoned tools for all manner of jobs. It's hard to believe that these artifacts and solid metal tools are just moldering away in rural Ontario! But they are. They're lying around, abandoned, absolutely *everywhere*.

I took an NEF (RAW) image, fooled around the exposures artificially and then created this HDR with Boozysmurf's help in photomatix. That halo effect? Not sure how to get rid of it. I'm not even sure how we MADE this image. It's a mystery! However, it's also the first HDR I've worked on, and so I am satisfied. Not bad for a first attempt!
